Do not climb onto a wet or storm-damaged roof to “prove” there is damage. A roofer can document roof conditions and recommend repair or replacement; your insurance policy and carrier—not the roofer—determine coverage.
Hailstorms in Eastern New Mexico can be loud, sudden and confusing. A few minutes after the storm passes, homeowners often walk outside, see leaves and ice scattered around the yard, and wonder whether the roof is fine or quietly damaged. The problem is that roof damage is not always obvious from the driveway. Some hail strikes leave visible dents or missing granules; others affect shingles, flashing or accessories in ways that are difficult to judge without getting close.
The best response is not panic and it is not immediately assuming you need a new roof. It is a methodical sequence: protect people first, record what happened, look for safe clues, stop active interior water if you can do so safely, and get a qualified roof inspection when the evidence or storm severity justifies one.
Step 1: make safety the first roof decision
Wait until the storm has fully moved away before going outside. Hail-producing thunderstorms can include lightning, strong straight-line winds and additional cells behind the first one. Downed power lines, broken tree limbs, loose metal and damaged structures can remain hazardous even after the hail stops.
Wet shingles, loose granules, damaged decking, displaced metal and wind can make roof access dangerous. You can learn a surprising amount from the ground, from windows and from an accessible attic without walking the roof.
If part of the roof appears collapsed, a large tree or limb has struck the structure, electrical components are exposed, or water is entering near electrical fixtures, treat the situation as a broader property-safety issue rather than a normal roof inspection. Keep people away from the affected area and contact the appropriate emergency or utility professionals as needed.
Step 2: document what the storm did before cleanup erases the clues
Once it is safe, take photographs or video from the ground. You are not trying to diagnose the roof yourself. You are preserving a record of the event and the visible condition of the property shortly afterward.
- Photograph hailstones on the ground before they melt, ideally with a familiar object or ruler nearby for scale.
- Take wide photos of each side of the house so later close-ups have context.
- Photograph dents on gutters, downspouts, metal fascia, vents, outdoor equipment or other exposed metal.
- Record missing shingles, lifted edges, displaced ridge pieces or roofing debris you can see without climbing.
- Photograph torn screens, damaged siding, broken skylight glazing or impact marks around the property.
- Save the date and approximate time of the storm with the photos.
Why photograph things besides the roof? Hail damage can be easier to see on thin metal and other exposed surfaces than on shingles from ground level. Damage to gutters or roof vents does not prove the shingles are functionally damaged, but it confirms that parts of the building experienced impacts and gives an inspector useful context.
What hail damage can look like on asphalt shingles
Hail can affect asphalt shingles in several ways. Research and manufacturer guidance describe impact effects such as dents, tears or fractures, and displacement of surface granules. Granules help protect the asphalt layer from sunlight, so concentrated impact-related granule loss can matter even when there is no hole through the shingle.
From the ground, however, it is easy to confuse normal color variation, manufacturing marks, foot traffic, old blisters and ordinary granule loss with hail. That is one reason a few dark spots in a phone photo should not be treated as a diagnosis.
What hail damage can look like on metal roofing
Metal roofing has a different damage pattern. Hail commonly causes denting. IBHS research notes that dents in metal roof covers can be cosmetic rather than evidence that the roof lost its water-shedding function. Functional concerns are more likely when an impact damages seams, locks, coatings, fasteners, flashings or penetrations, or when the roof assembly is otherwise compromised.
That distinction matters because a visibly dented panel and a leaking panel are not automatically the same thing. The inspection should identify what changed and whether the change affects function, appearance, or both.
Step 3: check ceilings and accessible attic areas
A hailstorm can be followed by wind-driven rain, and sometimes the first clue to roof trouble appears indoors. Walk through the home and look at ceilings, upper walls, skylight wells and areas around chimneys or roof penetrations. Fresh discoloration, damp drywall, dripping water or wet insulation deserve attention.
If you have a safely accessible attic, look from the attic floor or established walkway rather than climbing over framing. Use a flashlight to check for new damp areas, water trails, wet insulation, darkened decking or daylight where it should not be visible. Remember that water can travel along rafters or decking before it drips, so the interior stain may not sit directly beneath the exterior failure.
A water-heavy ceiling can fail unpredictably and may conceal electrical hazards. Keep people out of the affected area and contact an appropriate professional if water accumulation is significant.
Step 4: protect the inside of the property without creating a second hazard
If a small active drip is entering a safe area, move belongings away and use a container to catch water. Take photos before and during cleanup. Fans or dehumidification may help dry a minor damp area once the leak source is controlled, but substantial water damage may require professional drying or restoration.
Do not climb onto the roof with a tarp during wind, rain or lightning. Temporary exterior protection can be useful, but it should be installed by someone equipped to access the roof safely and without causing more damage. Also avoid smearing roof cement or caulk over every visible seam. A quick sealant patch can hide the actual failure and sometimes makes a proper repair more difficult.
Step 5: decide whether the roof needs a professional inspection
Not every small hail shower justifies a full roof project. On the other hand, waiting for a ceiling leak is not a reliable way to determine whether a significant hailstorm affected the roof. Consider an inspection when any of the following apply:
A useful inspection should identify roof-cover condition, flashings, penetrations, edges, ridge areas, metal accessories and other vulnerable details. The goal is not to find enough marks to “sell a roof.” The goal is to separate storm-related conditions from normal aging and determine whether anything needs repair, monitoring or replacement.
Step 6: ask for photos and an explanation, not just a conclusion
If a contractor says your roof is damaged, ask them to show you. Good documentation may include overview photographs of each roof slope, close-ups of representative conditions and notes identifying the location and type of damage.
Then ask the most important follow-up question: What does this damage do? A dent in a metal vent is easy to photograph, but the repair recommendation should be based on the roofing system and the functional condition of the roof—not merely the existence of a storm.
Step 7: repair versus replacement should be based on scope
Hail damage can lead to a small repair, a larger repair or a full roof replacement. There is no responsible rule that says “hail = replacement.” The decision depends on how widespread the damage is, whether repairs can be integrated into the existing roof, the condition of surrounding materials, roof age and history, decking condition, availability of matching materials and the performance of critical details.
A localized damaged vent or small shingle area may be repairable. Widespread shingle fractures or granule displacement across multiple slopes may support a different recommendation. A metal roof with cosmetic dents but sound seams may have a different outcome from a metal roof with damaged locks, flashings or penetrations.

Step 8: if insurance may be involved, keep roofing facts and coverage decisions separate
A roofer can inspect the roof, photograph conditions, prepare an estimate and explain the proposed repair or replacement scope. The roofer does not interpret your policy for the insurer and cannot promise that a claim will be paid. Coverage, deductibles, depreciation, exclusions and claim procedures come from your policy and carrier.
If you decide to contact your insurer, keep the photos you took after the storm, save the contractor’s documentation and keep a simple log of calls, emails and documents. Read your policy and ask your carrier direct questions about deadlines and required steps rather than relying on a contractor’s general statement about what insurance “usually covers.”
When several storms occur during the same season, dated photos and inspection records become especially useful. They help establish what the property looked like after a specific event instead of trying to reconstruct the timeline months later.
Questions to ask a roofer after hail
- What storm-related conditions did you find, and where are they located?
- Which conditions are cosmetic and which affect roof function?
- Can the damaged areas be repaired without disturbing large amounts of surrounding roofing?
- Did you find older wear or installation issues that are unrelated to this storm?
- If replacement is recommended, what specific evidence makes repair impractical?
- What roof-system details will be included in the written scope?
What not to do after a hailstorm
Do not sign a roofing contract simply because a salesperson says a neighborhood storm “automatically qualifies” your roof for replacement. Do not allow someone to intentionally damage shingles to create evidence. Do not pay a large unexplained cash deposit to an unfamiliar traveling contractor. Do not assume a roof is fine simply because you cannot see a leak. And do not climb onto a storm-damaged roof if you are not trained and equipped for roof access.
A calm, documented process is better for the house and for your decision-making.

Can hail damage a roof without causing an immediate leak?
Yes. Some impacts may damage the roof covering without creating immediate water entry. Manufacturer guidance notes that hail-related shingle damage may not always be obvious right away.
If my gutters are dented, does that prove the roof needs replacement?
